I realize its been quite a while since I have last posted anything here. It isn’t that I havn’t wanted to. There have actually even been a few times that I have sat down to do it, its just that, well…..nothing was happening. One of my friends aptly described the last few weeks as being quite like the last few weeks of pregnancy. Very well put Amy. Thank you.
So while we have been waiting on paperwork that allows us to submit more paperwork so that we can apply for more paperwork, these are the thoughts that have been running through my mind: (pause while I stop the chaos in my mind and figure out where to start….)
We need plane tickets! But seriously, should you purchase tickets before you know the government is going to let you in the country? But should you wait to buy tickets until you have permission to get into the country knowing that you may pay a serious premium for last minute seats?
Tickets have now (as of today) been purchased. No premium on seats. No permission to get into the country….yet.
How does one, an American in particular, care for an infant in China? That is to say, can you actually fit enough Huggies and Enfamil into one airline permitted suitcase to last an entire year. No, probably not. Through tireless research on the subject, I have found that the Chinese do not use diapers. Nope. Not even cloth. I jest not when I tell you that apparently dress their infants in crotchless bottoms and they simply relieve themselves as needed. I am also very relieved to be able to tell you that Shenzhen apparently has Wal-Mart. We may not get Huggies, but we WILL NOT be going the crotchless bottoms route...no word yet on the Enfamil.
Clothes. Everything is made in China. Most of my clothes in my closet say “Made in China” on the tag. But can you actually find those particular clothes in China? Absolutely. All of my size 0 girl friends will be in clothes shopping heaven when you come visit me. Those of us who are significantly taller than the average 5’3” Chinese woman, well let’s just say they don’t carry size 8.5 shoes in stock. I did however, read that in the Western shopping district there happens to be a store with clothing up to size 12! Yeah!
Language. Ugh. I have this image in my mind of being stuck somewhere by myself with no interpreter. Having successfully passed lesson 1.2 of Rocket Chinese Mandarin Lessons I feel thoroughly prepared to inform those nearest me of the day’s date, yiyue shisihao, or January 14th…I think. But then I realize that as valuable as this new skill is, I just may have to ask someone for say….a bathroom, or directions home.
Ahhhh, yes, the stressful thoughts are plentiful. But I will leave you with this. It is now only 9 days until we move to China. We have absolutely no idea how most of this stuff will come together, but we know for certain there will be no snow. How can that be so bad?
So, now I guess all that is left is to fit everything we own into 7 duffle bags and hop on a plane with two young children, for approximately 21 hours. J
